Kaokoland

Kaokoland 15 nights/16 Days

Swartbooisdrif, Epupa Falls, Marienfluss, Van Zyls Pass, Puros, Palmwag

Kaokoland is one of the wildest regions of Southern Africa, with very few roads and structures and home to the Himba people. The Kaokoland area extends South-North from the Hoanib river to the Kunene river (that also marks the border between Namibia and Angola). It is largely mountainous. Desert Elephants are commonly roaming the dry riverbeds of the westward flowing Huab, Hoanib, Hoarusib, and Khumib rivers. It is along these riverbeds the animals find the occasional spring fed waterhole and most of their nutrient rich foods: mopane bark, tamarisk, reeds, and the pods, bark, and leaves of the ana tree. Other species found in Kaokoland include oryx, kudus, springbuck, ostrich, giraffes and mountain zebras.

This exciting expedition takes us to Swartbooisdrif (graves of the Dorsland Trekkers) and along the Kunene River to Epupa Falls, over the famous Van Zyl’s pass with a magnificent view of the Marienfluss and the Hartmann Mountains to camp next to the Kunene River with the Angolan mountains across the river. We return via drives passing the notable landmark of Rooidrom and along the Khumib and Hoarusib rivers to Puros and Sesfontein. We spend a night at Spitzkoppe between huge boulders and rock paintings.

Botswana Big Three

Botswana Big Three 14 nights/15 days

Moremi, Savuti and Chobe

This northern part of Botswana is described as “freak of nature” teaming with game and consists of the three main areas of Moremi, Savuti and Chobe. All have their own character even though they lie so close to each other. We however start our adventure with a wild camp under the Botswana sky on one of the many salt pans. We journey through the capital of the north to replenish supplies before we settle down in Moremi. 4 days of the best game viewing are on the daily itinerary.

Our next stop is Savuti which is known for its huge floodplain and savanna fields and home to a large number of elephants who frequently visits your campsite. This is also the playing field of large amounts of savanna game.  Several National Geographic documentaries about the interaction between lions and hyenas were shot at this location by the well-known Dereck and Beverley Joubert.

Chobe is our destination before we start heading south again. You can regularly view large herds of buffalo, impala and sable antelope from the luxury of your campsite which is situated on the banks of the Chobe River with their neighbour Namibia on the other side. The campsites are also not far from the town of Kasane from which boat cruises on the Chobe or visits to Victoria Falls can be arranged. As we head home we will overnight at a campsite where free roaming elephants frequently visit your campsite. You can experience them around a man made waterhole at nearly touching distance.

Kafue

Kafue 13 nights/14 Days

Livingstone, Kafue, Itehzi Tehzi, Hwange (Return via Zimbabwe)

This tour takes us to one of the biggest parks in Zambia.  After crossing into Zambia from Kasane in Botswana, we camp two days outside Livingstone at a game farm where Eland is commercially farmed before we enter the Kafue National Park from the south. We travel to our first campsite where we settle down next to a campfire with only the night sounds of wild life around us for the next two nights. South Luangwa

South Luangwa 15 nights/16 days

Livingstone, Luangwa River, South Luangwa, Mana Pools (Return via Zimbabwe)

This is quite a travel but worth every moment of the adventure. We spend some time on a game farm with domesticated Eland, camp next to the Luangwa Bridge; replenish supplies at the local market of the border town of Chipata before we spend three nights at our campsite on the banks of the Luangwa River just outside the South Luangwa National Park. Day or night game drives to take in the diversity of the environment as well as bird species. Elephants are known to harass locals in the villages and the huge hippo population of the Luangwa River and small antelope like the Puku is worthwhile seeing.

We return through back roads and the capital of Lusaka and cross the border at the very busy border post of Chirundu into Zimbabwe. We check in at Mana Pools for two days at our campsite on the Zambezi River to explore one of Africa’s wildest game parks.
